Data Centres vs Small Cities: The Energy Comparison
The electricity numbers that surprise everyone.
The headline
A single hyperscale data centre can draw 50–100+ megawatts of power. For context, 1 megawatt roughly powers 750–1,000 typical homes. That means one campus can use as much electricity as a small city of 40,000–100,000 people.
The bigger picture
Data centres already consume a significant share of national electricity — and forecasts show that share growing fast as AI workloads explode. In some regions, data centres are projected to account for a fifth or more of all electricity demand within a decade.
What that means for you
- Grid capacity: in constrained areas, data centre connections can delay or block connections for homes, schools and hospitals.
- Costs: grid upgrades get passed on through network charges on everyone's bills.
- Energy security: a region's power that was "spare" suddenly isn't.
- Emissions: unless powered by genuinely new renewables, that demand means more fossil generation on the margin.
The honest counterpoint
Data centres also create demand that can fund grid investment, and many operators sign large renewable power deals. The question communities should ask isn't "do we want them?" — it's "what are the conditions?":
- Is the power new renewable, or displacing existing supply?
- Is the facility genuinely energy-efficient (modern design, heat reuse)?
- Will the community see any benefit — heat networks, investment, or jobs — or just the burden?
How to find the real numbers
Planning documents usually state the facility's power capacity in megawatts. Grid operator reports show regional connection queues. Multiply megawatts by ~800 homes per MW for a quick "town equivalent" comparison — and ask your council to publish the same figure in plain English.
